How Vaping Affects Our Mental Health

In the past two years, we have all experienced an increased sense of uncertainty and stress. The transition of going to work/school remotely or hybrid was confusing, unorganized, and maybe chaotic for some. But how did we manage the stress?

For some people, vaping was the easiest solution. In the Truth Initiative article, Colliding Crises: Youth Mental Health and Nicotine Use, one study found that “81% who had used e-cigarettes said they started vaping to decrease stress, anxiety, or depression, according to an August 2021 survey of 1,000 people between ages 15 and 24.”

Meanwhile, as people turn to vape as a solution, a 2019 JAMA study of 30,000 current e-cigarette users, found that “current e-cigarette users have double the odds of having a diagnosis of depression compared to those who have never vaped.”

So, why do e-cigarette users believe vaping helps to de-stress and calm their anxiety? One reason is that big tobacco companies advertised vaping products as a helpful solution to calm down and relax.

Another reason may be due to nicotine withdrawal. When the body is used to the nicotine in its system, it can go through nicotine withdrawal if a person stops vaping – and the withdrawal symptoms can feel a lot worse or “heighten” than normal.

What is nicotine withdrawal?

Over time‚ your body and brain get used to having nicotine in them. About 80−90% of people who smoke regularly are addicted to nicotine. When you stop smoking‚ your body has to get used to not having nicotine. That’s withdrawal. Withdrawal can be uncomfortable. (Smokefree.gov)

It’s uncomfortable because of the withdrawal symptoms associated with it. Symptoms can include anger, frustration, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, and depression (Cancer.gov). That’s why it’s important that we educate our youths on the risks and dangers associated with vaping.
