Perhaps the most daunting aspect of helping schools deal with the scourge of students vaping is just how universal this problem is. According to a recent study by University of Cape Town, “16.8% of high school learners in South Africa have vaped in the past 30 days. It was found that 29.5% of matriculants make up the figure, with some reaching as high as 46% in some schools. This is juxtaposed against significantly lower reported rates of tobacco cigarette use (2%), cannabis use (5%) and hookah pipe use (3%).” Teens & pre-teens vaping on school grounds during the school day create myriad problems for school officials and educators. Fortunately, there are resources such as Soter Technologies‘ FlySense vaping detection devices, which notify school officials – in real time – when vaping (and/or bullying) is taking place in areas such as restrooms where recording devices are not an option due to privacy issues.
