News, Education, FlySense

Vaping and alcohol use among underage individuals has become concerning issues in Southwest Virginia. Recent studies and reports highlight the alarming statistics surrounding the prevalence of these behaviors among teenagers. Perhaps because of how the product is marketed, many parents harbor misconceptions about the safety of vaping., Nonetheless, it is crucial for parents and caregivers to fully understand the magnitude of the dangers of vaping and then engage in open conversations with their children, educating them about the risks associated with these activities. In this blog post, we will explore the data, shed light on the dangers of underage vaping and alcohol use, and provide resources for parents to address these issues effectively. For those who do not live in Southwest Virginia, most likely there is a corresponding agency in the community where you reside. Check your local library for helpful information.

The Growing Concern:

According to a Fairfax County Youth Study, an alarming fifteen percent of students reported vaping in the past month. Among 12th graders, 18% admitted to vaping nicotine, while 15% reported vaping marijuana. These findings are consistent with other studies that suggest older teens are more likely to use tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and drugs, compared to their younger counterparts.

The CDC’s Role:

In 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that approximately 1 in 6 high school students and 1 in 22 middle school students used tobacco products, with e-cigarettes being the most common method. Despite initial perceptions that vaping was safer than smoking, ongoing research has debunked this notion, emphasizing the dangers associated with vaping, such as the potential presence of harmful metal particles. It is crucial to dispel these misconceptions and educate young individuals about the true risks they face.

The state of Virginia defines e-cigarettes as noncombustible products containing nicotine that utilize various electronic, chemical, or mechanical means to produce vapor. This broad definition encompasses electronic cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, pipes, and other similar devices, along with their respective nicotine solutions or containers. It is important to recognize the extensive range of products that fall under this category.

Local organizations in Southwest Virginia, such as the Roanoke Prevention Alliance, have taken steps to support parents in addressing the dangers of underage vaping and alcohol use. Mackenzie Chitwood, a Specialist from Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare, highlighted the findings of the At Youth Risk Behavior study, which is conducted every two years in the Roanoke Valley. While alcohol use appears to be declining, vaping trends among teenagers fluctuate.

Chitwood emphasized that underage vaping negatively affects mood, impulse control, and learning, particularly because the teenage brain is not fully developed until the mid-20s. This underscores the urgency for parents and caregivers to engage in open conversations with their children, discussing the dangers associated with vaping and alcohol use.

Tips and Resources for Parents:

To assist parents and caregivers in initiating these important conversations, organizations like the Roanoke Prevention Alliance offer valuable resources and guidelines. One suggestion by Chitwood is to have such discussions inside a vehicle, where distractions are minimized and privacy is enhanced. This approach allows for a more focused and intimate discussion between parents and their children.

The rise of underage vaping and alcohol use among teens demands immediate attention. Parents and caregivers play a vital role in educating their children about the risks associated with these behaviors. By fostering open and honest conversations, utilizing available resources, and staying informed, we can work together to protect the well-being of our youth and ensure a healthier future for all.
